I want to start a conversation with you about how you view your life so that you can better understand context in your life and how this affects your current, future, and past decisions.
For context therapeutics, I think we have to go back to the very beginning of the human race. About 100 years ago, two separate, but inter-connected events happened: the discovery of the human genome (which we are still using today, but not always) and the development of a penicillin. In both stories, the people working on the research did so with the goal of healing the world.
Context therapy is a practice that tries to help people with problems they’re facing by addressing the context they’re dealing with. In a sense it’s like looking at a problem through the lens of your own personal history. In this case, the context I’m dealing with is that I have been a terrible person, but I can’t stop being that terrible.
So you’re saying that I need a penicillin? No.
No. What it is is that you need to see the world as it is, not the world as you would like it to be, and this is a practice that helps us to do that. Most of us are stuck in a very self-critical place and cant deal with a problem we perceive to be wrong without thinking about why we think it is. And I think the best way to see things objectively is to look at them through the lens of our own experiences.
We are very good at seeing things in a limited manner (such as a person’s face or a piece of equipment) but when we have a problem to solve we have the ability to look at the world through various perspectives, and this is the method that helps us to do that. The thing about perspective is that no matter how narrow it is we can always see the world from multiple perspectives.
A number of years ago we had the idea of being able to get a movie up and running in the background when we were working in the library (and, for the most part, not working on it). So we had a new idea with a movie. It was called “The Movie of the Century,” and it was the way it worked.
In the movie of the century, it shows the movie going on in the background of the scene, and we go in and film it. We film the movie as it is being made, as we watch it being made. Then we go back to the library and we watch it again, but this time with the movie added in. This way you can see the movie and still have the movie running when you are not working on it.
The idea is that the movie of the century was put together for a screening. We’re in the middle of a movie with a lot of scenes we don’t know what to do with. The idea is we can sit with the movie and watch it together, and then when it ends we can edit out the movie and make a new movie in our movie library.
Context therapeutics is a technique where you are not viewing your own movie. Instead you are viewing it and then editing it into something new. There are a few different ways to do this. You can have someone write the movie, or you can read the novel, or you can make a movie from a video of yourself. It all depends on how much you want to edit the movie you are watching into something better.
